Handpans are not only beautiful instruments, but also true works of art. As the proud owner of several handpans, I faced the challenge of storing them safely and stylishly. This gave rise to the idea of developing a handpan wall mount that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. In this blog post, I'd like to tell you everything about my wall mount—from the idea to the development and final implementation.
The idea behind the wall mount
When I bought my first handpan, I was looking for a suitable way to store it. While traditional floor stands were practical, they took up a lot of space—especially in my studio, which already has limited space. I also wanted to display my handpans in a way that would also make them stand out.
The inspiration came when I took a closer look at the shape of my handpans: Their round and elegant structure practically cried out for a wall-mounted solution. So I began drawing up initial sketches for a round wall mount that would be both stable and gentle on the instrument.
The design process
Developing the wall mount was an exciting journey, with functionality and design at the forefront. Using Fusion 360 3D CAD software, I was able to digitally realize my ideas and test various models before printing the first prototype. Here are the key design features:
- Round shape: The holder was deliberately designed to be round to perfectly support the shape of the handpan.
- Soft support surfaces: To prevent scratches or damage to the handpan, I've integrated rubber buffers printed from TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane). These buffers provide a soft support surface and prevent chafing against the wall.
- Hidden screws: To keep the design clean, I placed the screw heads so that they are hidden by the rubber buffers.
- Optimized dimensions: The diameter of the sound hole (GU) on the back of my handpan is 84 mm. The holder has been reduced to 70 mm in diameter, allowing the instrument to be hung securely.
- Stable wall plate: With a diameter of 160 mm, the wall plate offers enough space to hold the handpan securely without rubbing against the wall.
The production
Once the design was complete, it was time to implement it. I was able to produce the first prototypes using my Bambulab 3D printer. The use of robust filament ensures that the wall mount is stable and durable. After some testing and optimization, I was satisfied with the result and printed several copies.
Feedback and further development
Since the first prototypes were well received, I decided to share the wall mount with others. I initially gave away a few free copies to members of a handpan WhatsApp group. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Many players appreciated the combination of design, functionality, and the fact that the mount was specifically designed for handpans.
Based on the feedback, I've further improved the wall mount and better integrated the screw heads. I'm now offering this version at a low price through my Etsy shop.
Why a handpan wall mount?
A wall mount for handpans offers numerous advantages:
- Space-saving: The handpan is securely attached to the wall and does not take up valuable floor space.
- Safe: The soft rubber buffers protect the handpan and keep it free from scratches.
- Aesthetic: The handpan becomes a real eye-catcher and can be presented like a work of art.
- Practical: The handpan is always ready to hand without having to be stored in a bag or suitcase.
